Guided self-help

Print Friendly and PDF

Guided self-help is based on the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and helps you to focus on your short term manageable goals.

You will work through self-help materials and learn new techniques to improve how you are feeling. At the end of each session you and your therapist will agree actions and goals for you to complete before your next appointment. As this is an active therapy, you will be encouraged to implement these skills in between sessions in order to maximise the benefits of therapy.

It is short term therapy and sessions will be for up to half an hour each week. The therapy can be offered either face to face or over the telephone.

This therapy will help you to understand the CBT approach and has been shown to be an effective treatment for both depression and anxiety disorders. However, it may also be the first step in helping to prepare you for further input if needed.
