Additional performance measures
We measure operational and financial performance alongside the quality of our services, which you can read about in the Financial Report and Quality Report. You can read more about the quality of care in our Quality Report, which is now published separately, by visiting our website.
We have also measured our environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) impact as an organisation.
Environmental
We are fully committed to playing our part in tackling climate change, not only to benefit the environment globally, but also to contribute to, promote and support, the health and wellbeing of the local community which we serve.
With the energy and commitment of the whole Trust, we will endeavour to look at every aspect of our business and the services we provide, taking a holistic approach to reducing every aspect of our environmental footprint, whilst working hard towards to providing sustainable high-quality services for present and future generations.
Green plan
Green plan
Our green plan outlines the Trust’s vision for sustainability and how this will contribute to delivery of a net zero mental health service, in line with national NHS net zero targets.
The green plan covers ten key areas with associated actions that enable us to deliver our net zero goal and implement our wider vision for sustainability. Our plans to reduce carbon emissions, and increase sustainability also supports the Trust financially, by saving money on revenue costs, improving care environments for service users and colleagues, and being positively recognised for our sustainability efforts. By implementing and following the green plan, it enables us to meet the minimum statutory and policy requirements of sustainable development, whilst aligning with our strategic objectives.
Environmental performance
-
Total emissions for scopes 1, 2 and 3 in 2023/24 was 2,827. A 47% reduction on 2019/20 when it was 5,349.
-
Our travel and transport emissions were 1,859 in 2023/24. A 44% reduction on 2019/20 when it was 3,332.
-
Our energy carbon emissions were 968 in 2023/24. A reduction of 54% from 2019/20 when it was 2,017.
Becoming more sustainable
In 2023/2024 we continued to make good progress with our ambitions to reduce our carbon footprint by becoming more energy efficient and exploring and implementing more sustainable ways of working.
Energy
For energy conservation and reduction of carbon emissions from the Trust estate, we have invested in the following energy efficiency measures:
- Increasing levels of loft insulation where required to reduce heat loss.
- Replaced old fluorescent lighting with energy efficient LED lights to reduce energy and maintenance costs.
- Installed two new building management systems (BMS) at two of our inpatient wards which provide improved controls for heating, hot water, and ventilation. As a result, we have increased energy efficiency, reduced gas consumption, energy costs, and carbon emissions.
- As part of the new build wards in Lincoln, roof mounted solar PV panels were installed to generate an approximated 74800 kwh’s per year.
Travel and transport
To support more sustainable modes of transport, we have expanded our network of elecric vehicle charging stations at our site across Lincolnshire and are working in partnership with a local bus company, to provide colleagues with access to discounted bus travel scheme, covering the city of Lincoln and the surrounding villages.
Waste and recycling
Following the publication of the NHS clinical waste strategy we have been working towards achieving these targets and already have in place a successful offensive waste stream. Within the strategy there are targets set for clinical waste segregation and at present we already meet and exceed this.
Our recycling rate across Trust sites is currently at 39%, and so to improve this we are in the process of assessing bin placements and signage across our estate, looking at reducing the number of available bins in office areas and placing them centrally to encourage correct segregation.
There is some disparity in recycling segregation, with our best performing sites recycling over 70% of their waste, and our worst performing recycling less than 10%. Improved segregation will lead to further improvements in our carbon emissions and supports us in our net zero emissions targets.
We have also implemented a process for the safe disposal of vapes which enables them to be compliantly recycled. In the coming year we will also be introducing separate waste streams for food waste at our inpatient sites in anticipation of the upcoming Food Waste Legislation UK.
Clinical waste segregation 2023/24
- 10% HTI
- 17% alternative
- 73% offensive
Emergency Planning, Resilience and Response (EPRR)
The annual EPRR self-assessment is reviewed against a set of core standards to provide an assurance that NHS organisations are working to meet their EPRR statutory duties and obligations.
The Trust declared non-compliance against the core standards in 2023/2024, which is a reduction from partial compliance in 2022/23.
The Resilience Unit has requested additional EPRR resource to assist to restore compliance for 2024/25. The EPRR Policy has been reinstated and is now incorporated within the Business Continuity Policy.
Lessons learned have been identified within both exercising and incident response. A planned evacuation exercise of the Trust’s new build at Peter Hodgkinson Centre identified some areas that would enhance areas of working, whilst the Trust response to a power outage at Ash Villa, identified a need to strengthen power resilience. The Trust remains engaged with Lincolnshire Resilience Forum (LRF) to share lessons learned and best practice.
88% of strategic commanders have received Principles in Health Command Training, with additional courses being provided with other agencies to promote interoperability.
To further demonstrate system and partnership working, the Trust has engaged with both LRF and NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board exercises, including Ex Mighty Oak, a multi-agency national exercise to test resilience in increasing levels of power loss; Ex Esra, a rest centre exercise and Exercise Helios Revenge which explored response during extreme heat.
The team has also been involved in supporting the wider Trust during periods of industrial action.
Social
We believe in involving the people who receive our care, and who work in our teams, when we are making decisions that affect them.
As part of this work, we are committed to:
• Ensuring we provide inclusive healthcare services for all.
• Understanding that discrimination still exists in our society and doing all we can to eliminate it.
• Advancing equality of opportunity for both our staff and service users.
• Fostering good relations between different people.
• Focusing on the needs of individuals when carrying out our work.
• Demonstrating the tangible progress we have made against our equality objectives.
