Published on: 28th September 2021

Selina Adda-Dixon has been shortlisted for Nursing Associate Trainee of the Year at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2021. Selina commenced her nursing associate training with the University of Lincoln and Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) in January 2019, and currently works on Brant Ward as a Registered Nursing Associate. Selina is the first and only Nursing Associate to be employed on the ward and is an amazing advocate for the role and the contribution that a nursing associate can make to older people's mental health.

The Nursing Associate Trainee of the Year Award recognises outstanding final-year nursing associate trainees and celebrates their ability to deliver safe, quality hands-on care and support the registered nursing workforce. Selina was nominated for being a true role model; professional, positive, supportive and passionate. Her dedication, involvement in quality improvement projects and her role as link nurse for physical health, have made her a valuable asset to the Brant Ward team.

Selina said:

“The Nursing Associate training was a big step up from being a Healthcare Assistant but my managers have been really supportive and becoming a Nursing Associate is so worthwhile. My training and new role allow me to help patients on the ward with their physical and mental health, and I have been inspired to continue my training to become a Nurse.

“I would really recommend the training with LPFT and the University of Lincoln to anyone who is looking to progress in their career in this field.  Brant Ward is like a family and I am grateful to everyone who has helped me during a challenging couple of years.

“I am committed to providing excellent patient care and what I find most rewarding about my job is being able to see patients leave well after their stay on the ward”.

Sue Brace, Ward Manager at Brant Ward, said:

“Selina epitomises what a nurse should be and I would describe her as calm, kind, supportive, caring, compassionate and patient-centred. Selina is always professional and has supported the Brant Ward team to understand the value of the role of the nursing associate within older people's mental health.

"She is motivated, driven and respected by her colleagues, recently having been awarded the 'kindness recognition award' which is voted for by other staff members on her ward. Every ward needs a Selina.”

Selina and Sue took part in the awards judging panel on Friday 17 September 2021 and the winners from each category will be announced at the ceremony on Thursday 4 November.
