Trust sets out aspiration for zero suicides in draft Suicide Prevention Strategy

Published on: 25th September 2015

Every suicide is both an individual tragedy and terrible loss to society. Suicides are not inevitable and prevention for potentially vulnerable individuals is vitally important.

Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) launched its draft Suicide Prevention Strategy this month at our Annual Public Meeting and would now like to consult with staff, patients, carers and other stakeholders on the six action areas identified.

Suicide can be a complex behaviour, with a number of underlying causes, therefore approaches to prevention must be wide-ranging. The LPFT Suicide Prevention Strategy objectives are aligned to those in the National Suicide Prevention Strategy and focuses mainly on reducing the risk of suicide for those individuals accessing our local services. As well as providing better support for those bereaved or affected by suicide more generally.

We are however mindful of the need for collaborative working with other statutory organisations, third sector providers, service users/patients and their friends and families, to ensure that the LPFT suicide prevention strategy aligns with the wider Lincolnshire strategy.

The strategy defines our aspiration for zero suicides and how we will seek to support other agencies to ensure that vulnerable individuals accessing services, particularly those at times of crisis, are supported and kept safe from preventable harm.

Following the launch of the consultation we would welcome the views of both staff, patients/carers and our stakeholders on the six action areas identified.

The draft document will be available for comment until Friday 30th October 2015.
