Will it be third time lucky for children's mental health team in awards ceremonies?

The mental health crisis and home treatment service for young people in North East Lincolnshire, has been shortlisted in two more national awards ceremonies for its quality of care.

Staff from Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s (LPFT) North East Lincolnshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (NEL CAMHS) team, are celebrating after making it through to the final stages of this year’s prestigious Nursing Times Awards and the Children and Young People Now Awards 2016.

The service has been recognised this time for its entry ‘Crisis and intensive home treatment team’ in the Nursing in Mental Health category of the Nursing Times Awards and comes after last year’s shortlisting for its innovative service redesign.  They also made the final of the 2015 Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Awards, but narrowly missed out on collecting the trophies.

In the Children and Young People Now Awards, the service has been shortlisted twice, the crisis team entry in the Health and Wellbeing category, with their service redesign submission recognised in the Public Sector Children’s Team category.

Dr Tracey Urquhart, service manager for North East Lincolnshire CAMHS said she hoped that this year, the team would return triumphant.

We’re absolutely delighted to have our crisis and home treatment provision recognised as the excellent service it is

, said Tracey.

All the staff are committed to providing the highest standard of care to the young people and their families that we serve in the area.  Part of our success is evident in the fact that only two young people we have treated for a mental health crisis in the area in the last four years have required hospital admission.  As a result of this we’ve had many commissioners and health providers from other areas praising our service and trying to emulate it.  I’ve also been asked to present at a regional conference about crisis and what makes our team so successful.

The NEL CAMHS team provides specialist services for children and young people up to the age of 18, including treatment for anxiety, eating disorders and self-harming.

They were recently rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, as part of LPFT’s comprehensive inspection of its services last year.  Inspectors said they found ‘committed and caring staff’ and received nothing but positive feedback from patients and carers during their week-long inspection.

The service accepts emergency referrals, 24-hours, seven days-a-week and also offers a telephone advice helpline for young people, their families and fellow health professionals.

Ian Jerams, Director of Operations at LPFT, said he was extremely proud of the quality of the Trust’s CAMHS services.

These services bring together a wide range of professionals and remove some of the barriers people may experience

, he said.

We want young people to remain supported and involved throughout their treatment and that’s exactly what they get from NEL CAMHS.  I wish the team the very best of luck in the awards.

NEL CAMHS staff will travel to London to present their entries to a panel of judges and will have everything crossed for victory come the final Nursing Times ceremony on Thursday 26 October and the Children and Young People Now Awards on 24th November.
