New website dispels myths about talking therapies

Published on: 20th October 2016

A new website for people suffering with depression and anxiety has been launched in Lincolnshire.

steps2change talking therapies is a service run by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Their new website includes information about free help available locally from the NHS for anyone suffering with common mental health problems.

Steve Skinner, steps2change Clinical Lead said:

Many people struggle with depression, anxiety or stress and one in four adults at some point in their life will suffer from mental health problems. However, there is a stereotypical view that talking therapies involve lying on a sofa with a box of tissues to hand while talking to a counsellor. In fact this couldn’t be more wrong and we hope to dispel this myth by providing the public with more accurate information about talking therapies on our new website.

These days talking therapies services such as steps2change offer a whole range of treatment options including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which can be delivered face-to-face, over the phone or as an online course. We also run bereavement and mindfulness groups and courses on panic, worry, wellbeing, low mood and stress.

Nick Harwood, steps2change Service Manager said:

People often don’t realise that talking therapies are available on the NHS, that they are free and completely confidential. There are many treatment options to suit people’s circumstances. Talking therapies have been proven to be very effective in helping people with problems they face every day or with events that have happened in the past. On our new webpage we have testimonials from service users who have been helped by steps2change to feel like themselves again.

Anyone suffering with stress, anxiety, panic attacks, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can self-refer to steps2change or speak to their GP and ask to be referred.

If someone is struggling with depression or anxiety they need to know that they’re not alone, what help is available locally and how to access it. This new website is here to do this.”
